THANK YOU!   YOU have made it possible for our Northwest Valley Branch of AAUW to award FIVE $1000 book grants to five very grateful recipients at the April 16th Annual Awards Luncheon!  Each of the five young (or older) women will have $500 to purchase her books for each of her first two semesters in college.  Checks are sent to the college bookstore for her textbooks and ancillary materials.  Considering how expensive each book costs now (some over $200 each), the $1000 is a HUGE HELP!   Often, it makes the difference between attending college or not!

This year, we have added an additional Book Grant for a very-soon-to-graduate female from Valley Vista High School in the Dysart School District.  As each new high school in the Dysart S. D. has its first graduation class, (like Willow Canyon  three years ago) we've added a female recipient,  so now we are awarding  THREE grants to graduates of Dysart School District #89.  This is the FIRST YEAR that Valley Vista has a Senior Class!  We also gave two grants to two "returning-to-formal-education" females one from Estrella Mountain Community College and one from Rio Salado Community College.

Those of you who attended our Annual Awards Luncheon on April 16 met and heard the recipients tell their stories, tell you about their academic goals, and, I hope, made you feel satisfied that your financial contribution to our Book Fund is important, needed, and will be well used.    Altruistically, we are helping five women but we also are helping ourselves because we all will be living in a better educated world.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Book Grant Brunch

Twenty-two AAUW members and guests enjoyed brunch at the home of Diane Haskell-Decker on November 4th.  Marilynn Babyar, counselor at Dysart High School, described the efforts of the counselors to prepare the students for college and career training.

The Book Grant brunch donations will be used for the 2010-2011 school year Book Grants which will be awarded in the spring.
